After we left the cathedral, we walked to the other side of the cloister to have a look at the so-called treasures held by the cathedral. And who would not call them treasures after seeing these exquisite paintings and carvings?
Consider the centuries that have passed since these objects were created. The fact that they survived the ravages of time alone is amazing. That they survived the distinctly anti-religious GDR is more amazing still.
Not to mention a couple of world wars; the second must have had a major impact, what with Allied bombing and Russian invasion – or was Naumburg spared somehow?
Both cathedral and town appear to have been spared, but I can’t find any information as to why. Perhaps even war can’t reach everywhere.
