After a lazy start - late breakfast followed by a stop for coffee - we drove 6km north to Matapouri for some beach, swimming and carcinoma development time. Since we also wanted to visit Whale Bay, supposedly one of the Great Beaches of the World, some hill-climbing was involved.
Here’s Manapouri Bay, a great crescent of soft sand and calm water.
Rather than dropping our beach towels and enjoying this lovely spot, we trudged over a steep headland to Whale Bay. I’m not sure what these guys were trying to tell us, maybe “go back and sit down”.
We pressed on and after 30 minutes or so, Whale Bay came into view.
...and the serious beach time began.
